In August 2019, Gran Canaria experienced one of its most severe wildfires in recent history. The fire started on August 17 in the municipality of Valleseco and quickly spread, driven by high temperatures, strong winds, and the island's dry vegetation. Due to the challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions, fire-fighting efforts were particularly difficult for emergency services.

The wildfire led to the evacuation of around 9,000 residents from over 50 towns and villages. Communities most affected included Artenara, Gáldar, Tejeda, Agaete, and Moya. It was reported that approximately 10,000 hectares of land were destroyed, inflicting significant damage on the local flora and fauna. Some properties were also consumed by the flames.

Firefighters, the military emergency unit known as UME (Unidad Militar de Emergencias), and supporting aircraft worked tirelessly to contain and suppress the flames. It took several days before the fire was brought under control and even longer to completely extinguish it.
